Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also included high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her heritage – was drowned out under the deluge of misogyny.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the mission, including elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the Kármán line of space.

The group of women also included experts in multiple disciplines.

The venture behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company founded by a Amazon founder.
